Even though the 2024 NFL season hasn’t begun, Jerod Mayo is already facing criticism from New England Patriots supporters. Fans are so incensed by the head coach’s recent remarks about his potential starting quarterback that they are already clamoring for Bill Belichick to return.
It’s no secret that the Patriots suffered a great deal once Tom Brady left in 2020. Mac Jones failed to live up to the expectations of the seven-time Super Bowl champion in 2021, and Bailey Zappe struggled mightily to move his offense starting in 2022.
In the 2021 draft, Jones was the first pick chosen by the Pats, while Zappe was chosen in the fourth round. With the third overall pick in the 2024 Draft, most analysts believe that New England would take this opportunity to bring in a new signal-caller. That was the plan, anyway, until Mayo revealed that Jacoby Brissett is competing for the starting job.
“A man such as Jacoby is an excellent leader. Everyone adores him. Getting him back within the structure is undoubtedly beneficial to us. In an interview, Mayo stated, “And honestly, look, he could absolutely be our starter this year.”
In case it wasn’t enough to incite the fans’ wrath, the head coach emphasized, “We’ll have to see.” Although we’re not certain that we’ll select a quarterback at number three, we do feel confident having a player like Jacoby available.”
In his debut season of 2016, Brissett had a brief time with the Patriots before being dealt to the Indianapolis Colts. The quarterback re-signed with the organization on March 20, 2024, for a one-year contract.
The North Carolina State graduate has completed 981 passes in 1,600 attempts over the course of his nine-year career. He has gained 10,574 yards, 51 touchdown passes, and 23 interceptions.
