Sad report: Matthew Betsey shed tears as the West Tigers introduced a new coach to the team.

The Wests Tigers have named Matthew Betsey as interim head of football; however, there is no schedule for announcing who will take over the full-time position.

Tim Sheens, the premiership-winning coach, was confirmed as the head of football in 2021 before taking over this year.

However, the relationship did not last long, as Sheens stepped down after less than a year, allowing Benji Marshall to be fast-tracked into the head coach position for 2024.

It is uncertain who will become the club’s long-term football manager, with Mark O’Neill mentioned as a possibility due to his close relationships with the team and expertise with the Eels.

Former Wallabies coach Michael Cheika has also been discussed, but we won’t know for certain until an assessment of the club’s poor on-field performance is done.

“As previously mentioned, a final appointment for this position is on hold until the Holman Barnes Group Review is finished. There is currently no set schedule for when this will be completed,” the club said in a statement.

“Matthew Betsey will assume leadership of the football department immediately in preparation for the 2024 season, bringing a plethora of sports administration expertise with him.

“Betsey joined the Wests Tigers as head of pathways in 2021, after more than a decade of coaching and development at Cricket Australia.

“His role expanded last year to include the Wests Tigers Women’s program, where he was instrumental in the club’s NRLW licence approval and subsequent inaugural season in the Telstra Women’s Premiership.”
