Steve Cooper, the head coach of Swansea City, has made the decision to depart the team. When Cooper arrived at Liberty Stadium in the summer of 2019, he had 12 months left on his three-year contract.

The parties decided to part ways amicably prior to the 2021–22 season, despite the club’s attempts to initiate talks over a contract extension.

“It feels like a good time for all parties to make a change, but I am very proud of what we have accomplished over the past two seasons, especially getting to the play-off final,” stated Steve Cooper.

“I am really appreciative of the players, the staff, and the amazing supporters of this wonderful club for making me feel so welcome. I hope the group has continued success in the future.

With the start of the new season just over two weeks away, Swansea City chief executive Julian Winter stated: “We feel that this conclusion is in the best interests of the club.”

“This decision was made in good faith two weeks ago, and I want to express my gratitude to Steve for taking pre-season and for his professionalism during the resolution process.

“In his two years as manager, Steve has fully committed himself to the team, consistently raising our standing in the league and providing young players with first-team experience.

“It is widely known that the club had to become much more sustainable due to its financial situation after dropping out of the Premier League, and we are happy that so many young players have come here and been given that chance by Steve and his coaching team.

“When a manager has a year left on their contract, similar to the playing team, there needs to be a clear strategy that enables the team to keep improving both on and off the field, and that involves having conversations about contracts.

“As a club, we believed that the matter needed to be clarified, and as the new season approaches, the joint decision gives both sides an opportunity to go ahead.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank Steve for his work during his two years with the football club and wish him luck in his future endeavors.”

After two years in command, during which he guided the team to two straight top-six finishes in the championship, Cooper is leaving Liberty Stadium.

The 41-year-old led the England Under-17 team to a World Cup victory in 2017. After moving to SA1 in June 2019, he managed the team’s best league season start in 41 years.

In a season marred by the coronavirus epidemic, the Swans lost in the play-off semi-finals despite an exciting finish to the campaign.

The team attempted to qualify for the playoffs once more in the 2020–21 season, finishing in the top six for the second time in as many years. Cooper also became the first Swansea City manager to oversee 100 games since Roberto Martinez. After going one better to get to the Championship play-off final, the Swans were defeated by Brentford at Wembley.
