As he spoke about the players from his first season as head coach in 2021, Campbell became almost emotional. Despite their dismal start of 0-10-1 that season and their widespread ridicule throughout the league, Campbell believes the Lions laid the groundwork for the team’s current success.

“We’re just more talented, but we’re still the same hardworking team now.” “You talk about a bunch of dudes who were just going to battle,” Campbell remarked of the nucleus of the [2021] group. “Those guys, you talk about laying it on the line and going toe-to-toe with anybody and willing the fight to the end; I’ll never forget them, even though we didn’t quite have the horses we have now.”
At that point, Campbell became really emotional. Campbell took a long time to gather himself before he explained why.
Campbell remarked, “I like guys who put it on the line.” Perhaps you’re not the most skilled person, or perhaps you’re outnumbered… I have the utmost respect for guys who are willing to fight. And that’s our main focus.”
