The Los Angeles Chargers and quarterback Justin Herbert have agreed to a “landmark” contract extension, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. The parties have reached a deal on a five-year, $262.5 million agreement that will keep him in Los Angeles until the 2029 season, according to Schefter’s story.
This offseason, Herbert is the most recent young quarterback to agree to a long-term contract. After being given the opportunity to explore free agency, Lamar Jackson and the Baltimore Ravens engaged in a protracted negotiating process that culminated in a $260 million, five-year contract. Jackson’s contract guarantees $185 million, of which $135 million is guaranteed in full at the time of signing.
Jalen Hurts utilized this offseason to his advantage as well, using his MVP-caliber campaign and Super Bowl trip to briefly hold the title of highest-paid player in NFL history. Hurts signed a new five-year contract with the Philadelphia Eagles that is valued at $255 million with the possibility of earning up to $275 million. A no-trade clause and guaranteed funds of $179.304 million are included in the deal.
For the first time in the team’s existence, Philadelphia has inked a player to a contract that includes a no-trade clause.
