Heartbreak: The head coach of Canadian Women’s Hockey, Kevin Dineen, has announced his departure due to the comback of…

The 50-year-old Kevin Dineen most recently served as the Florida Panthers’ head coach for three seasons (2011–13), during which he guided the team to its first Southeast Division championship in team history in 2011–12.

In addition, he led the Portland Pirates of the American Hockey League for six seasons (2005–11), taking home the AHL coach of the year title in 2005–06. The Toronto, Ontario, native competed for Canada six different times as a player, taking home silver in the IIHF World Championship in 1985 and 1989 as well as the Canada Cup in 1987. In addition, he participated in the 1984 Olympic Winter Games and the 1987 and 1993 World Championships.

“With the Olympics starting in less than two months, this is a critical time for Canada’s National Women’s Team, and we feel Kevin is a terrific fit with our staff as we get ready for Sochi,” stated Melody Davidson, Hockey Canada’s general manager of female national teams. “Over the next few weeks, his experience both on the ice and behind the bench will be invaluable.”

Together with Davidson, Dineen will collaborate with assistant coaches Danielle Goyette and Lisa Haley to finalize the Canadian team for the 2014 Winter Olympics in the upcoming weeks.

There are still twenty-four players in centralization: three goalies, seven defensemen, and fourteen forwards. Three goalies are among the 21 players who will represent Canada at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games.

In the upcoming months, Canada’s National Women’s Team will play in international competitions and the Midget Series in preparation for the 2014 Olympic Winter Games, which get underway in Sochi, Russia, on February 6. Canada plays Switzerland on February 8th to kick off their Olympic campaign.
