Due to their actions during a furious altercation during a game on Monday, manager Charlie Manuel of the Philadelphia Phillies was suspended for one game on Friday.
However, it was Davidson’s ban that caused a stir in the baseball community.
In the eighth inning of a 10-inning, 4-3 victory over Houston, Manuel was shown the door. He believed there had been a foul tip, so he and Davidson got into a heated dispute that turned ugly. When the Phillies hosted the Boston Red Sox on Friday night, Manuel served his suspension.
Due to their actions on Tuesday, home plate umpire Bob Davidson and Phillies manager Charlie Manuel both received one-game suspensions.
Davidson was not suspended for a single incident, in contrast to umpire Mike Winters’ 2007 suspension for intensifying a fight with Milton Bradley and umpire Brian Runge’s 2008 suspension for bumping Mets manager Jerry Manuel.
Over the years, Davidson has had numerous run-ins with both managers and players. Therefore, even if his heated confrontation with Charlie Manuel prompted the MLB to take action, the league’s reference to “repeated violations” suggested that the sum of those incidents led to his suspension.
Tuesday’s altercation between Davidson and Manuel resulted from Davidson getting mixed up with Phillies catcher Brian Schneider following Schneider’s misplay of a called third strike, which allowed Jason Castro of Houston to advance to first base.
When asked on Friday if he thought Davidson had intensified their fight, Manuel responded, saying, “What happened was that he didn’t get out of the way, and I screamed at him, like, ‘Get the hell out of the way.'” “Oh, you think I did it on purpose?” he said. And with that, he turned around and spoke. I yelled back at him when he said that, and he ejected me from the game.”
Manuel continued, “I didn’t care whether he came back at me or not.” To be honest, I can’t really recall what I said, if you’re interested. He said a few things that I can still recall. However, I am unable to recall them all. And I was furious. I am therefore unable to tell you exactly what I said.”
When asked if Davidson’s suspension surprised him, Manuel said, “Not really, because I think, basically, both of us were doing about the same thing, I guess.”
Manuel refused to comment on whether it satisfied him that the umpire was also punished, claiming that Major League Baseball made the decision to suspend him. “I’ve been around umpires a long time,” he joked. I didn’t claim to enjoy them.
Davidson missed the Minnesota Twins’ interleague game against Milwaukee on Friday in order to fulfill his sentence. He was replaced by a minor league call-up umpire
