After Sunday’s 6-1 loss at Newcastle was deemed “wholly unacceptable” by chairman Daniel Levy, Tottenham fired interim manager Cristian Stellini on Monday. Ryan Mason will take over for Stellini, who was only appointed manager last month after his former manager Antonio Conte departed the team. In his four games as manager, Conte’s long-term assistant won just one, dealing what looked to be football in the Champions League the following year.

Despite having played at least one more game than the teams immediately above them, Tottenham is six points outside of the top four in the Premier League and is currently ranked fifth.

Spurs’ miserable season reached an all-time low at St. James’ Park when they trailed 5-0 after just twenty-one minutes.

Levy said in a club statement that “Sunday’s performance against Newcastle was wholly unacceptable.”

“Cristian and his coaching staff are leaving their current positions. Cristian took over during a trying moment in our season, and I would like to thank him for the professionalism with which he and his coaching staff handled things.”

But the choice to swap Conte out for a member of Levy has come under increased fire from supporters since he hired his backroom crew in the first place.

“We can look at many reasons why it happened, and while myself, the board, the coaches, and the players must all take collective responsibility, ultimately the responsibility is mine,” Levy stated.

“Today, I had a meeting with the player committee. The team is committed to working together to secure the best possible season finale. We all understand that in order to receive your incredible support, we must put on performances.”

Mason, who assumed leadership duties towards the conclusion of the 2020–21 campaign, will be behind the bench for Thursday’s matchup at home against Manchester United.

Spurs had high expectations for this season after finishing fourth under Conte in the previous one.
