Early in the fourth quarter, the Jacksonville Jaguars led the New York Giants 17–13 and looked poised to pull away. As a drive deep into Giants territory was ready to enter the red zone, Christian Kirk, a wide receiver for the Jaguars, reversed the field for what seemed like a first down.
To the amazement of almost everybody, Kirk was declared short of the line instead.
“We thought it was a first down, but it wasn’t,” Jaguars head coach Doug Pederson said to media following the game. “There are instances as well where you want to take a chance on a challenge, a timeout in certain circumstances where you know it will, at most, be third and one or third and a couple of inches.
