Adrian Heath will coach Minnesota United in Major League Soccer for the 2017 campaign, the team has announced. Heath has almost 20 years of coaching experience in the United States and England. Most recently, he was the head coach of Orlando City.
Adrian Heath, the head coach of Minnesota United, said, “I spoke to Manny when the job became available because I’ve known him for a long time and he’s always spoken so fondly about what’s going on in Minnesota.” “I think the fact that they have a project and a solid plan in place is the most crucial thing. Although Dr. McGuire and this team have high goals, my current responsibility is to ensure that we are competitive from the start. Just take a look at the stadium that will be constructed in a few years. The other things will all be fantastic, but what matters most is what’s happening on the field, so I’ll be concentrating my efforts there for the next two months.
Heath, an Englishman from Staffordshire, played soccer professionally for eighteen years before turning to teaching. The midfield player started his career at Stoke City and went on to have a successful career at Everton, where he made 226 appearances, scored 71 goals, and won two league titles, an FA Cup, and the UEFA Cup Winner’s Cup in 1985. Heath played for Espanyol in Spain in 1989 before coming back to England to play for Burnley and Manchester City, where he eventually became player-manager in 1996.
After working as a coach for a number of English clubs, including Burnley, Sheffield United, and Coventry City, over the next eleven years, the Englishman moved to the United States in 2008 by happenstance after meeting Phil Rawlins.
The two met in Heath’s hometown of Newcastle-under-Lyme, where Rawlins, the former director of Stoke City, talked about his desire of starting a football team in the United States. Coincidentally, Rawlins required a manager.
After accepting the position, Heath was named head coach of Rawlins’ USL expansion team, the Austin Aztex. After moving to Orlando in 2010 and changing its name to Orlando City, the squad lived in Austin for two years.
Orlando locale won three Commissioner’s Cups and two USL Pro titles in just four years under Heath in its new locale. In addition, the USL team managed by Heath won two U.S. Open Cup matches against MLS teams.
