Sad news: Due to his wife, The coach of the Indianapolis Colts has officially announced his retirement

INDIA PARK – Despite knowing, the Colts said a hero’s farewell to Bob Lamey. The Colts believed you would never find out, but they knew.

We now understand. Bob Lamey, a longtime Colts radio announcer, left on his terms. He recently made a racial slur in a narrative he was recounting, and after someone complained to the Colts, he was fired. For Lamey, that is the conclusion of the story; for the Colts, it is just the beginning.

Colts owner Jim Irsay described Bob Lamey as “a legend and icon” in a statement issued by the organization upon Lamey’s retirement. “Football with the Indianapolis Colts is synonymous with his name.”

Yes, Jim, perhaps it is.

The Colts are among the few organizations that will not disassociate themselves from the disgraced former founder of Papa John’s, John Schnatter. Schnatter was fired from the board of directors of the pizza company he founded, as well as from the Purdue University school building, the Louisville football stadium, and the gym in his hometown of Jeffersonville for using the same racial epithet. Purdue made the promise to reimburse Schnatter for his $8 million gift. Jeffersonville returned $400,000 to the donor.

The only teams who seemed to be fully in support of Schnatter were the Colts and Ball State, his alma mater. Ball State then changed its mind about supporting Schnatter after originally pledging to have his name attached to the John H. Schnatter Institute for Entrepreneurship and Free Enterprise. The Ball State Board of Trustees decided to remove his name two weeks later by an 8-1 vote.
