ALLEN PARK — The Detroit Lions had a demanding workweek in New York, during which they lost a few players. However, nothing was as physical as what happened on Monday night.

During a strenuous session in Allen Park, running back Jahmyr Gibbs, along with top draft picks Terrion Arnold and Ennis Rakestraw, all left with injuries. While Arnold is dealing with an upper-body injury and Rakestraw is dealing with an ankle injury, Gibbs was checked for a hamstring injury. Add to that the passing of quarterback Hendon Hooker (brain), guard the body count is getting to an uncomfortable level after injuries to center Kevin Zeitler, tight end Sam LaPorta (hamstring), lineman Alim McNeill, cornerback Emmanuel Moseley (pec), edge rusher James Houston, and backups Nate Lynn and Connor Galvin that ended the season.

Before this weekend’s exhibition versus Kansas City, the Lions had already been forced to sign Jake Fromm as a backup quarterback in order to get through the Hooker injury. Their problems at cornerback are also becoming worse; after losing Moseley to a long-term injury last week, Arnold and Rakestraw both went down early on Monday night. During a one-on-one drill with Amon-Ra St. Brown, Arnold fell and hurt his upper body. He spent several minutes being assessed on the sideline prior to heading inside the changing area. During one-on-ones, Rakestraw also hurt his ankle. He was checked out on the sidelines without his shoe on before limping inside.

Detroit concluded practice without four cornerbacks, all of whom are vying for rotational roles this season, as Carlton Davis was also sidelined for an undisclosed reason. Khalil Dorsey and Kindle Vildor wrapped up defense practice with the starting squad.

The following players aren’t in the practice: safety Josh Moore, defensive tackle David Bada (Achilles), linebacker Malcolm Rodriguez, edge rusher Josh Paschal, safety Morice Norris, linebacker Malik Jefferson, and linebacker DaRon Gilbert. Dan Campbell, the head coach, said that Bada is anticipated to miss the season.

Now for some more practice-based observations:

The Lions hosted their inaugural the team’s first night practice of the year will begin at 6 p.m., marking a significant change from their 8:30 a.m. practice schedule during the first two weeks at Allen Park. Why the shuffle?

“The schedule varies a lot, especially from last year to this year, so we’re just kind of switching things up so they have to get used to it and start the day a little later. As the sun sets, we’re practicing outside, so we’ll get some good work out there,” head coach Dan Campbell explained.

The Lions worked on crucial situational work like third-and-shorts and go-to-goes, held one of their most physically demanding practices of the season, and let the guys loose for some live tackling.
