The all-time great Reese Atwood of Texas softball has been named the new USA Women’s Softball New…

Catcher Reese Atwood, who dominated Texas softball history, was named one of the 10 finalists for the USA Softball collegiate player of the year award, the organization announced on Wednesday.

Atwood, a sophomore from the town of Sandia near Corpus Christi, has already shattered school records for the most home runs (22), RBIs (86), and runs in a single season while leading the Longhorns to the top seed in the NCAA Tournament and the top spot in the national polls. In addition, she has the best batting average (.427) and slugging percentage (.909) among the Longhorns. The Big 12 Player of the Year title is already hers.

Cat Osterman, a former pitcher for Texas, is the only Longhorn to take home the trophy; additionally, she is the only three-time winner in the country, having won in 2003, 2005, and 2006. Since Blaire Luna, a pitcher, qualified for the top 10 three times in 2010, 2011, and 2013, Atwood is the first top 10 finalist from Texas.

The top three finalists will be unveiled on Monday, and the winner will be declared before the Women’s College World Series begins in Oklahoma City on May 30. Previous winners, coaching representatives from ten Division I Conferences in each of the ten USA Softball regions, and media members cast their votes for the USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year award. Voters are not taken into consideration.
