Sadly, England Lionesses, she is still in pain.

Due to an injury, England’s goalkeeper Mary Earps had to leave the game in the first few minutes of their Euro 2025 qualifying match against France.

England’s shot-stopper winced in the first minute of play at St. James’ Park as she handled a pass from her backline and fell to the ground visibly uncomfortable.

The Manchester United goalkeeper, who was honoring her 50th international cap, appeared to be in severe hip flexor discomfort as she received treatment on the field.

Following treatment, the 31-year-old was helped to stand to thunderous acclaim, but the England No. 1 again stopped dead in her tracks, clearly upset. Still, erasing the tears, Earps continued.

Play came to an end less than two minutes later with England’s No 1 back on the field. Hannah Hampton, the Chelsea goalkeeper, was sent in to take Earps’ position. Following the 2-1 defeat of England, Earps was later seen walking on crutches.

Prior to Friday night’s pivotal game, there were no worries about Earps’ injuries.

The injury occurs as elite-level players are put under more pressure to perform at a high level and as women’s football contends with a packed schedule of games. Many have called for the schedule to be reevaluated as injuries mount. Along with her English teammates Maya Le Tissier and Katie Zelem, Earps was one of just three players to play every minute of United’s Women’s Super League campaign.

There is still a lot of conjecture over the World No. 1’s future. Next month marks the expiration of Earps’ present contract with United, and negotiations with the club administration are still ongoing over a potential extension. Nevertheless, Earps comes with a reputation as one of the top goalkeepers in the contemporary women’s game, having attracted interest from several European clubs that wanted to sign her for free.

Arsenal, United’s Women’s Super League opponents, made a record-breaking offer for Earps’ women’s goalkeeper last year; however, it is thought that the Gunners’ interest has since waned.

Earps, who signed with United in 2019 and most recently helped the Red Devils win the Women’s FA Cup at Wembley Stadium, stated that United now has the final say over her future after requesting guarantees on the team’s goals.

“I’ve asked the club for some confirmation on what they’re trying to achieve, and when I have those answers I’ll be able to make a decision,” she stated in an interview with Sky Sports. The club will decide.”
