Boston’s Red Sox defeated the Seattle Mariners 3-2 on Wednesday when Rafael Devers scored his third hit of the game and doubled home the winning run in the tenth inning.

With a scoreless tenth inning, Zack Kelly (4-1) pitched out of a serious situation to win. Boston defeated the Mariners, who are in a close contest with Houston for first place in the AL West, two games to one. Danny Jansen got the tying single in the sixth inning.

Dylan Moore had an RBI single, while Josh Rojas hit a home run for Seattle.

Devers led off the bottom of the tenth inning, and Tyler O’Neill was the automatic runner at second. Pitching to the left-handed hitting Devers, with an open base at first and left-hander Jonathan Díaz on the mound, was the manager Scott Servais of Seattle’s decision, and the All-Star slugger made the Mariners pay.

Devers blasted a 2-0 slider from Díaz (0-1) off the lower part of the Green Monster in left-center, and the ball sailed past Seattle’s outfielders, making O’Neill’s score simple.

It was Devers’s first game-ending hit since June 14, 2021, and Boston’s fourth walk-off victory of the season.

In the first half, Kelly threw a wild pitch that let Cal Raleigh, the automatic runner, advance to third base with no outs. However, the right-hander kept Raleigh trapped at third by striking out Justin Turner, a rookie for the Mariners, and retiring Leo Rivas on a ground ball.

Mitch Garver grounded out to end the inning after Moore walked to load the bases following a pitch that struck Luke Raley.
