Nice Move; The charlotte Hornets basketball team has finally agree to move on and…
The Charlotte Hornets made the surprising decision to turn their focus to their young players last week when they traded Terry Rozier to the Miami Heat in exchange for Kyle Lowry’s contract and a 2027 first-round pick.
It would seem that the team would allow Lowry, whose contract is about to expire, to walk in exchange for a possible buyout, so he could join a contender. However, the Hornets have more ambitious plans for both his contract and Gordon Hayward’s, who is also nearing the end of his.
By hanging onto their two sizable expiring contracts for long-term players, the Hornets hope to provide teams with cap relief this summer.
Naturally,Since the goal is to get paid for taking on long-term debt, they would not be acting in this way out of altruism.
The Hornets are hoping teams that wish to reduce their luxury tax bill in the upcoming years call them before the February 8th trade deadline, as the league’s new CBA has made life more difficult for teams over the past two seasons.
For the Hornets, it is a good plan with a fallback option in place in case Lowry and Hayward’s expiring contracts (worth a combined total of over $61 million) do not appeal to anyone. The fallback is to merely allow those two to expire and provide teams with the same offer, but with the substitution of renting out cap space.

This appears to be the most prudent course of action for a team in dire need of talent. The Hornets’ roster is years away from being competitive, so they are in no position to offer draft picks in exchange for talent upgrades.
