Fantastic Announcement: The head coach of the Miami Dolphins announced the approval of two fantastic deals.
Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk pulled up his sleeves, sifted through the 2,506 pages of the Sunday Ticket trial transcript, and discovered some interesting information.
Vice president of broadcasting rights, policies, and compliance for the NFL Cathy Yancy testified that starting with the 2024 season, both head coaches will have to do interviews during games.
“We are implementing a new policy this year that requires every club to have a head coach available for an interview live during the game,” Yancy stated. “One head coach for the first half and one for the second half must be provided by each team. And all TV partners can access it, as well as all teams.”
This is a departure from prior years when coaches could respond to inquiries while leaving or entering the locker room for halftime.
This is obviously a move meant to provide viewers with greater access and understanding during broadcasts. The value of these interviews could be disputed because, for the vast majority of the time, their sole purpose is to allow the coach being interviewed to complete the interview as fast as possible without providing any interesting information.
As the league’s coaching ranks become more diverse—the majority of coaches have grown up with networks shoving these walk-and-talks into the mix—perhaps that will change over time. We will likely have to sort through a lot of brief and boring responses in the near future as Coaches operate with extreme caution and exhaust their allotted time for availability.
