Cade Kurland, the second baseman for Florida, has been sidelined since he was hit by a ball during the series opener against Columbia a few weeks ago.
After hitting a walk-off single against Mississippi State on Friday night, Kurland disclosed that what was initially thought to be a bone bruise was actually a fracture.
“I had an MRI on Monday, and it turns out that I’ve been playing with a fractured hand for the last five weeks,” Kurland stated. “It’s been challenging, but I’ve just been trying to play through it, and here we are.”
He remarked, “The way I work, I hit and I hit and I hit.” That’s how I usually work. My routine has changed only from that. I’ve had to adjust my routine significantly, which is obviously not in my best interests. It’s been challenging, but I’m simply trying my hardest and putting the team first in this situation.
Kurland’s season-long strange performances can be attributed to the injury. Against Miami, a five-strikeout day was the first indication that things wasn’t quite right. Kevin O’Sullivan stated to Gators Wire at the time that “he doesn’t have many days like that,” therefore it wasn’t a big deal.
Sully was correct. Despite being on a nine-game hitting run, Kurland’s strikeout rate was high and his average was declining. However, Kurland’s defense has proven to be the greater issue. He has had trouble making some throws, most likely because he is unable to get the familiar grip on the ball.
“I’m tossing with my hand,” Kurland declared.
