According to his agency’s confirmation to ESPN, quarterback Tua Tagvailoa of the Miami Dolphins has created history by agreeing to the most lucrative contract extension in the team’s history. With his $212.4 million contract deal, Tagovailoa will play for the Dolphins for a further four seasons.
Before the Green Bay Packers inked a contract with Jordan Love a few hours later, Tagovailoa was momentarily poised to become the third-highest-paid quarterback in the NFL according to the $53.1 million average yearly value of his contract. The guaranteed amount under Tagovailoa’s contract is $167 million.
At the height of his career, in 2023, Tagovailoa led the NFL with 4,624 passing yards and a career-high 29 touchdown passes, good for the third-highest overall passing yardage in team history. Additionally, he was the first Dolphins quarterback to top the NFL since 1992 in terms of passing yards.
Before Tagovailoa joined the team, the Dolphins had persistent trouble securing a reliable quarterback since Dan Marino’s retirement before the 2000 season. The Dolphins have started 25 quarterbacks, but Tagovailoa is the one who finally seems to be the team’s future quarterback.
