Lorenzen, who signed late in spring training and made his debut on April 15, went 5-6 with a 3.81 ERA in 19 games (18 starts) for the Rangers. Lorenzen made just two outs in his final start for Texas on Saturday against Toronto, giving up four runs and five hits. On Sunday, he took the mound once more and allowed just one run in four innings of relief.

After being traded to Philadelphia, the 32-year-old Lorenzen pitched a no-hitter. He was a first-time All-Star with Detroit in the previous season. On March 23, he agreed to a one-year, $4.5 million contract with the Rangers, who were just the winners of the World Series. Lorenzen, who has spent the last three seasons mostly as a starter, is 45-44 with a 4.08 ERA in 361 career games (87 starts) with the Los Angeles Angels, Detroit, Cincinnati, Philadelphia, and Texas.

One game ahead of Boston, Kansas City held the third wild card place in the American League going into Monday, the day before the trade deadline. With four teams separating them, Texas trailed the Royals by six games in the wild-card chase and was third in the AL West.

Following injuries, two relievers for the Royals left Sunday’s 7-3 loss to the Chicago Cubs. On his lone pitch, right-hander John Schreiber grounded out, then injured his knee while covering first base. They acquired right-hander Hunter Harvey in a trade with Washington two weeks ago, but he only threw seven of his 22 pitches for strikes before leaving with a back spasm.

On July 5, Pennington made his major-league debut at Colorado by striking out the final two batters he faced in an inning. In 37 outings for Triple-A Omaha, the 26-year-old lefty is 6-3 with a 2.26 ERA and 79 strikeouts in 59 2/3 innings. He was sent to Triple-A Round Rock by the Rangers.

Additionally on Monday, the Seattle Mariners sent minor league catcher Andruw Salcedo to the Cincinnati Reds in exchange for veteran first baseman Ty France and cash. France, a 2022 AL All-Star, is hitting at the age of thirty.223 with 31 RBIs and eight home runs.
