Camp Notes: Going into his third season, Williams feels confident.
At the beginning of his third training camp with the Detroit Lions, wide receiver Jameson Williams has changed significantly. He exudes a confidence that is significantly greater than it was during his first two seasons in the league.
Perhaps it’s because he won’t be starting camp with an injury or a ban for the first time. He also understands that, after finishing the previous season with a bang, he will play a significant role in this offensive in 2024.
After Williams hauled in an Alabama single-season record four touchdowns of 70 yards or more and totaled 11 touchdowns of 30 yards or more as a junior, the Lions moved up from 32 to 12 in the 2022 NFL Draft to select him.
As the No. 2 option at receiver behind Amon-Ra St. Brown in his third season, he will have ample opportunity to demonstrate his explosiveness, as he has demonstrated throughout his first two seasons in the NFL. Their strongest big-play danger is someone the Lions are counting on to do big things.
“Since he’s been here, this is the most confident I’ve seen him,” Lions head coach Dan Campbell remarked of Williams. “When we began this offseason, he had the appropriate mindset, and it hasn’t diminished in the slightest. We appreciate where he’s at psychologically and emotionally because he’s in a good place, has absorbed the coaching, is making plays, and is trying to build on it.”
Early in training, Williams has drawn a lot of support from the audience. Last week, three plays into the first team session, he grabbed a 70-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Jared Goff. Through the first five practices of camp, he has performed admirably. With all the other offensive weapons the Lions have at their disposal, a breakout season from him may lead this team to unprecedented success. Both his offensive teammates and coaches are aware of this.
“Dude, I’m so happy. We’re just a month away from our game, and I’m excited to show everyone what our team is made of and what we’ve been practicing every day.”
