TRAGIC NEWS: He could be a drag racing athlete, but his crash left him deaf.
After spending more than 15 days in a Virginia hospital receiving treatment for a brain damage sustained in a terrifying 300 mph crash, Southern California drag racing great John Force has begun his rehabilitation.
Born in Bell Gardens and currently residing in Yorba Linda, the 75-year-old Force was involved in a catastrophic car accident on June 23 during his first-round Funny Car elimination run at Virginia Motorsports Park. The accident resulted in a serious brain damage. The automobile crossed the centerline of the strip and smashed into the left concrete guard wall on the driver’s side after his engine blew up near the finish line. After that, the car smashed into the other wall and skidded back across the track.
In the collision, Force also suffered injuries to his right hand and sternum.
Tuesday, in a statement, Force was airlifted to a neurological rehabilitation facility after being released from the Virginia hospital on Tuesday, according to his racing team. According to Force’s family, the transfer was a significant improvement in his recuperation.
Force, a Cerritos College student, was alert and conversing with safety personnel right away following the catastrophic collision. Before being evacuated off the track, he was evaluated by an NHRA medical team.
Force’s family expressed gratitude to track employees who assisted him following the collision in a previous update.
