Ohio State Softball: As a result of a disagreement, the head coach of the team declared the dismissal of several players.

Head softball coach Kelly Kovach Schoenly was fired by Ohio State, the school said on Tuesday. For the previous twelve seasons, Schoenly oversaw the softball program.

In 2024, the Buckeyes had a 31-20 record, which was insufficient to get them into the NCAA postseason. OSU was placed sixth going into the Big Ten Tournament, but the 11th-seeded Wisconsin Badgers beat them in the first round.

Schoenly guided Ohio State to five NCAA regionals and 367 victories. She is the program’s second-most successful coach ever. Her record in Big Ten conference play was 155-113-1. She was fired as head coach nonetheless, since the Buckeyes had failed to qualify for the NCAA Tournament for two straight years.

In a formal statement from the athletic department, Ohio State executive associate director of athletics Mike Penner expressed his gratitude.

“I would like to express my gratitude on behalf of the department to Kelly for her leadership of the program and for the positive influence she had on the numerous student-athletes who wore the Scarlet and Gray during her tenure, both on and off the field.”
