Matsui has undoubtedly closed deals before, but it’s unclear exactly what part he’ll play for San Diego.

Matsui could potentially replace All-Star closer Josh Hader for the Padres, who are expected to lose him this offseason.

In either case, the Padres have strengthened one of their most pressing needs in the bullpen with this significant offseason addition.

According to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, the contract includes opt-outs after the third and fourth years as well as an injury clause that might turn the fifth year into a club option.

Though they still have a lot of work ahead of them this offseason, the Padres appear to have found their An experienced left-handed reliever with closing experience to take Hader’s place.
