The Hollywood heavyweight, best remembered for his parts in “Dances with Wolves,” “Yellowstone,” and “The Bodyguard,” is back with his most ambitious and intimate undertaking to date.
For the four film series “Horizon: An American Saga,” which chronicles the settling and development of the American West, Costner serves as writer, director, producer, and lead actor.
Haze Ellison, played by Costner, and Marigold, portrayed by actor Abbey Lee, are in “Horizon,” running from gunslingers out for vengeance. The show looks at issues of betrayal, love, and violence.
For Costner, the concept for “Horizon” has taken decades to develop.
Costner claimed that although he had always enjoyed Western movies, he frequently thought they lacked authenticity. This changed when he saw a Western where the language and music were correct, the people were clothed authentically, and the countryside was a major part of the story.
“These large, vintage Westerns are difficult to make. They’re challenging. Things take their time, but you must pay attention to detail. Costner stated, “It’s not just about the gunfight; you have to invest in the humanity of what was happening as people were making their way across this country and uprooting an entire culture that had existed for thousands of years.”
