I’m astonished that Chris Tanev is suffering with yet another tragic injury.
The Calgary Flames have announced that defenseman Chris Tanev is out with an upper-body ailment. He is thought of on a daily basis. The Calgary Wranglers, the Flames’ AHL affiliate, have called up Nick DeSimone. Matthew Coronato was assigned to the Wranglers to make room for him on the roster.
Tanev sustained the injury against the Colorado Avalanche on Monday night. Tanev was struck by Avalanche forward Ross Colton along the boards fifteen seconds into the contest. When Tanev stood up, he headed off the ice for the dressing room.
Tanev is in the latter year of a four-year contract with a $4.5 million AAV and is ranked third on The Athletic’s trade list by Chris Johnston. Tanev, who is renowned for his toughness, leadership, and defensive prowess, has seven points in 27 games this season for the Flames. He is thought to be among the NHL’s top defensive defensemen.

Tanev’s injury history is the main unknown that affects his trade value. Due to many injuries, the 33-year-old right-shot defenceman only appeared in 56 games in 2022–2023. Tanev has experienced a couple near-miss injuries this season during practise and games. Most notably, late in the month, he exited a game against the Vegas Golden Knights after deflecting a shot off his face. Tanev participated in all 82 games in the 2021–22 season, but he was sidelined for part of the postseason. Despite playing with a separated shoulder and a damaged labrum, he made a comeback for the series against the Edmonton Oilers.
The 29-year-old right-shot defenceman DeSimone has four assists in eight games this season for the Flames. The Flames might move Dennis Gilbert to a second pairing with Noah Hanifin and pair him with Ilya Solovyov on their third pair. If they wish to avoid upsetting the Solovyov-Gilbert combination, they might also pair DeSimone with Hanifin.
