WLBT STARKVILLE, Miss. The family at Mississippi State was devastated to learn of the passing of a legendary Bulldogs football player.
Mississippi State Athletics reports that legendary MSU player Johnie Cooks passed away on Thursday. He was sixty-four.
“I’m mourning my friend and Leland native Johnie Cooks, an MSU student. A representative for Mississippi State, Sid Salter, tweeted, “He was a bad man on the gridiron, but a kind, generous soul off the field.” “I will miss his enduring friendship and I adored his smile. For his entire life, Johnie put up a valiant fight. May God reward him and his loved ones.
Cooks was a Leland, Mississippi, native. Cooks is among the top five in school history in sacks (24) and was named an All-SEC linebacker three times during his Bulldog career.
After the 1981 season, he was named to five All-American teams as well.
Director of Athletics at Mississippi State Zac Selmon declared, “Johnie Cooks is without a doubt among the very best to ever put on the Maroon and White while also standing as one of the most decorated college football players of his era.” “He really accomplished everything during his career, from winning an NFL Super Bowl to receiving numerous honors while a Bulldog. Johnie is officially an MSU legend, and as such, he will live on in Starkville forever.
