Tennessee’s Memphis Matt Riser has been named head baseball coach at the University of Memphis, following a nationwide search led by Vice President and Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Laird Veatch. Riser takes over as the program’s 18th head coach.
After ten seasons as head coach at Southeastern Louisiana, where he assisted in leading the Lions to three Southland Conference championships and four NCAA Tournament berths, Riser joins the Tigers. Additionally, Baseball America named him one of the best under-40 coaches in the country recently.

With 320 victories with the Lions and consecutive 40-win seasons (2015–16), Riser’s 320–224 overall record placed him second in program history’s all-time wins.

Riser coached 22 All-Americans in 15 seasons at Southeastern, including the National Stopper of the Year, the top hitter in the country, nine Freshman All-Americans, three Academic All-Americans, and ten Academic All-District players.
Four were referred to as the Three were named Freshmen of the Year, and one was named Southland Conference Player of the Year. One pitcher won both the Southland and Louisiana pitcher of the year awards, while two others were named Southland Relief Pitcher of the Year. The Lions won 14 games by the end of the game in 2022, including seven walk-off victories. They also won the Southland Conference Tournament and made it back to the NCAA postseason.
After persevering through a schedule of games that ranked seventh in the country in terms of non-conference strength of schedule, Riser led the Lions to notable victories over No. 3-ranked Arkansas and No. 1-ranked Ole Miss, the eventual national champion.
The 2022 offense for Southeastern was among the program’s top 10 in terms of doubles, triples, and home runs. SLU hit 70 home runs, which was the fourth-highest total in program history and the most ever.
