Unfortunately, the head coach of the St. Georgia Illawarra Dragons has been fired.
Anthony Griffin was fired as head coach of St George Illawarra following a run of six straight losses.
On Tuesday morning, Dragons officials notified Griffin—the first NRL coach to be fired this season—that he would be fired immediately, with Ryan Carr taking over in the meantime.
The 42–22 loss to North Queensland on Saturday night was thought to be the last straw.
In a move that encapsulates the Dragons’ lack of leadership, the team scheduled eight players to address the media on Tuesday at 8.30 a.m. at the Wollongong headquarters.
Chairman of Red V Griffin was notified of the decision by Andrew chairman Lancaster at 8 a.m., but the players were taken by surprise and were left without explanations when they were questioned by the media.
Ben Hunt, the captain of St George Illawarra and a devoted Griffin fan, was reportedly incensed with the club’s callous handling of the matter.
After spending time with the Broncos (2011–14) and Panthers (2016–18) before joining the Dragons in 2021, Griffin led the team in 58 games, leading to 22 victories and 36 losses for a 39% winning rate.
