Mississippi State University announced the death of head football coach Mike Leach in a statement. He was sixty-one.
Leach was hospitalized over the weekend for health issues related to a heart condition, and the university reports that he passed away on Monday, December 12. Leach’s family honored him as a husband, father, and grandfather in statements given to Mississippi State. They also discussed his career and ascent to prominence in the collegiate sports world.
The family said, “Mike was a giving and attentive husband, father, and grandfather.” They also mentioned Leech’s organ donation, referring to it as “a final act of charity.”

Leach’s incident at his Starkville home led to his admission on Sunday to the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, Mississippi. Mississippi State initially characterized the incident as a “personal health issue.”
As of Monday, the university stated that Leach’s condition was still critical, but it withheld information regarding the particular medical issues that had preceded his hospitalized up until the most recent declaration of his passing.
“Mike’s family is with him and appreciates the overwhelming expressions of love and support for the coach, but also requests that their family’s privacy be respected at this time,” the college stated on Monday afternoon. “That is the extent of information that MSU has available regarding Coach Leach’s condition, and the university will make no other comment at this time.”

In a separate tweet, Oklahoma’s offensive line coach Bill Bedenbaugh expressed his condolences to the Leach family, saying, “I’m devastated and heartbroken that my coach, Mike Leach, is gone. Coach was unique and left a profound mark on both my professional and personal life. Without him, I would not be in this position. I adore you, coach.”
