I’m leaving the lionesses if she isn’t sacked.

At the conclusion of the current Women’s Super League season, the 35-year-old Manchester City defender, who has 121 caps for the Lionesses, will call it a day on her playing career. Before relocating to City ten years ago, Houghton played for Leeds Carnegie, Arsenal, and Sunderland, a northeast team, in 2002. Houghton released a statement on her own website stating, “There is no easy way to say it, but I am retiring from football at the end of the current WSL season.”

“Choosing to retire is a really tough decision to make. Although age is a factor for all players, having to pronounce the words aloud still isn’t any simpler. My life and passion have been football, and I have enjoyed my career in the sport. “I am excited for whatever comes next but, in the meantime, I remain focused on giving everything I have left for Manchester City over the next two months.” Gareth Taylor, the head coach of City, stated: “Steph is, without a doubt, a game icon. Even if her on-field career is coming to an end, her legacy will go on for a very long time. She has made it possible for so many others to prosper in the future.”
