If he is not fired, I will leave. Coach Carlos Mendoza said he had a misunderstanding with his star player.

I’m going to leave if he’s not let go. Coach Carlos Mendoza claimed that he and his standout player had a disagreement.

NEW YORK (AP) A person acquainted with the decision said that Carlos Mendoza, the bench coach for the Yankees, is being hired by the New York Mets to be their manager.

Because the move had not been announced, the individual spoke to The Associated Press on Monday under the condition of anonymity.

In the previous four seasons, Mendoza worked as bench coach for Yankees manager Aaron Boone across town. Buck Showalter was let go by the Mets at the end of the previous season, and Mendoza took his position.

After taking over the franchise early last month, Mendoza becomes the first major hire made by new Mets President of Baseball Operations David Stearns.

Showalter’s right-hand man, Glenn Sherlock, who was bench coach last season, will take on a new job coaching the team’s catchers and using pitch calling to try to stop the opposition’s running game. It’s considered a key position, particularly in light of the likelihood that Francisco Alvarez, a strong prospect, will join the squad in 2023—if not at the start of the campaign, then at some other point.
