The Kentucky Wildcats will start the 2024–25 collegiate basketball season with a completely new appearance. John Calipari left Lexington after 15 seasons to take a position as head coach at Arkansas. Mark Pope was hired by Kentucky to replace him after he left BYU. Pope, who led the Cougars for five solid years, was a key guard on the Wildcats’ 1996 national championship team. Pope will introduce a fast-paced, offensive-focused style that mostly depends on 3-point shooting. Pope has little time to put together his Kentucky basketball lineup for the next season because every scholarship player on the team transferred or graduated after the 2024 NCAA Tournament.

After being selected Kentucky’s new head coach, Pope had to make an immediate impression because a number of the team’s players from the previous season had left Lexington. Moving forward After playing for Coach Cal for the previous two seasons, guard/small forward Adou Thiero followed Zvonimir Ivisic as the first player to follow Calipari to Arkansas. Guard Joey Hart will play for Ball State next season, and Aaron Bradshaw signed Ohio State. D.J. Wagner, a point guard, will move to Arkansas with Calipari.
Ugonna Onyenso, Rob Dillingham, and Justin Edwards have all decided to declare for the Draft. Tre Mitchell and Antonio Reeves, two of Kentucky’s leading scorers, graduated, meaning they won’t be available for the upcoming year. Most of Kentucky’s initial 2024 recruiting class moved to Arkansas with Calipari. Travis Perry, the point guard for Lyon County (KY), is the only player who has remained with the Wildcats. Perry is rated as a four-star prospect by 247Sports, which also ranks him as the 77th best player in the nation for the 2024 recruiting class. He fits in perfectly with Pope’s approach because of his shooting skill and offensive understanding. Trent Noah, a three-star small forward, is another local high school graduate that Kentucky later added.
Pope’s original Kentucky roster was primarily assembled using the Transfer Portal. Former Oklahoma State center Brandon Garrison and former BYU guard/forward Jaxson Robinson lead UK’s transfer class. In his lone season at Stillwater, Garrison—a five-star talent in the 2023 class—averaged 7.5 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 1.5 blocks per game. A year earlier, BYU’s top scorer, Robinosn, announced his withdrawal from the 2024 NBA draft in order to accompany Pope to Lexington.
