Breaking news: Multiple Philadelphia Phillies players have recently been suspended due to their improper behavior on the team.

Breaking: A number of Philadelphia Phillies players have been suspended as a result of their inappropriate actions toward the club.

Tuesday saw the suspension or banishment from Major League Baseball of five players who had broken the organization’s gambling rules. According to Matt Gelb of The Athletic, Jose Rodriguez, an infielder with the Philadelphia Phillies who was on the 40-man roster, has been declared ineligible for a year.

The league’s probe is based on betting data that indicates Rodriguez wagered 31 times on baseball, with three of those wagers on college ball and 28 on Major League Baseball.

While he was assigned to the White Sox’s Double-A affiliate in Birmingham, Alabama, he placed seven wagers on the team’s Major League performance. His other Club-related wagers included whether the game will see more or fewer runs scored than a specific threshold. Two of his bets concerned the results.”

The league claims that Rodriguez only wagered $749.09 on baseball, with $724.09 of the amount going to Major League play. He now faces a year-long suspension for wagers totaling $25.86 on average.

Parlays with MLB-related legs were included in the wagering.

Luckily, Rodriguez didn’t have any bets on the teams he was assigned to or on the games he participated in.

He disputes any suggestion that the results of the baseball games he wagers on were tampered with or influenced in any manner. He’s not lying about that, at least not in any way.

The Dominican Republic infielder, who was 23 years old, was having a respectable season in AA.

He was slashing.265/.329/.422 with four homers in 38 games. Rodriguez, who is well-known for his quicker-than-average speed, had at least 30 stolen bases in three of the last four seasons.

For many reasons, this is an awful scenario, but maybe it will serve as a warning to other players in the league about the kind of penalty they may expect if they engage in similar behavior.
