By Monday’s deadline for franchised players, Saquon Barkley and the New York Giants were unable to come to a long-term contract extension. As a result, Barkley, a star running back, may choose to play for the $10.1 million tag or perhaps take a season off.
The Giants placed Barkley, 26, on the franchise tag in March. Until July 17 at 4 p.m., the two parties have four months to come to a new contract agreement. There was no agreement reached during the talks that went down to the wire.
Barkley was not amused by being tagged, particularly following his career-high 1,312 yards and ten touchdowns gained through running.
The top four NFL running backs in terms of average annual salary are Christian McCaffrey of San Francisco ($16 million), Alvin Kamara of New Orleans ($15 million), Derrick Henry of Tennessee ($12.5 million), and Nick Chubb of Cleveland ($12.2 million).
Due to a salary cap move, Dalvin Cook, who was expected to make $12.6 million with the Vikings, was cut, and Cincinnati’s Joe Mixon recently took a pay cut to remain in Cincinnati.
On July 25, the Giants players report to training camp. Barkley, who has not signed the tender the team issued him upon being franchised, could miss a significant portion of camp.
