Troy Mann’s phone lighted up with a text message the morning after the Capitals, wearing a patchwork lineup that included five rookies, defeated the Penguins.

Barry Trotz was the source of it. “Thanks Manner for having all those rookie Caps ready,” Trotz wrote in a letter.

“They all played well — you own a piece of this win last night.”

When more than half of the players he coached with the Hershey Bears of the American Hockey League helped the Capitals win and advance to the Eastern Conference final, Mann beamingly smiled.

More than a month after Mann’s firing as Hershey’s head coach, several of those players are still playing important roles for Washington against the Vegas Golden Knights in the Stanley Cup Final.
