The NFL stated on Monday that wide receiver Josh Gordon of the Seattle Seahawks has been suspended indefinitely for breaking its substance usage policy. This is just the latest setback in his turbulent career. ESPN was the first to report on the suspension.
Gordon was released by the New England Patriots, for whom he played six games this season, then signed with the Seahawks. Gordon has been punished four times previously for identical infractions.
The Seahawks (11-3), who are tied for the best record in the N.F.C. West with the San Francisco 49ers, will be without Gordon for the remainder of the regular season and postseason. Gordon will also not receive compensation. Commissioner Roger Goodell has not set a deadline for determining what additional sanctions Gordon might face.
in the second round of draft, Gordon, who was cut by the Cleveland Browns in 2012, was suspended for the whole of the 2015 and 2016 seasons for breaking the league’s rules regarding the use of performance-enhancing drugs and other drugs of abuse. Before dividing the previous season between Cleveland and New England, he only appeared in five games in 2017.
Gordon suffered a knee injury in a Thursday night game against the Giants in October, while he was a member of the Patriots. On October 31, after being released by New England, he was quickly claimed by the Seahawks. He recorded 27 receptions for 426 yards and a score between New England and Seattle.
In his second season in Cleveland, Gordon recorded nine touchdowns and 1,646 yards from 87 receptions—it was his greatest season. That year, he was suspended for two games due to a drug offense.
