Michael Morgan hung up his boots more than two years ago, but he’s still not quite satisfied with his decision, according to the Cowboys great.
Two games into the 2021 season, Morgan—who now leads a totally different life as a financial professional—medically retired from the game due to a persistent shoulder issue.
The 2020 season began with the Townsville native dealing with shoulder issues in the first two games, but he was still able to take advantage of the game’s shutdown.

Michael Morgan, a legendary Cowboy, opens in regards to the injury that resulted in his early retirement. In addition, he revisits his memorable flick pass from the 2015 NRL Grand Final, steps into Jonathan Thurston’s shoes in 2017, and talks about what it’s like to work in finance.
Morgan said to the Fox League Podcast, “It was always going to be a tough ask to get through the season because within those two games, my shoulder came out maybe five times.”
The Covid break occurred after the second game, so we reasoned that this may be a good opportunity for us. If I get the shoulder fixed, I might be fine by the time the season resumes, or I won’t miss as many games as I would if I made an effort to play.

large-scale infection, and that’s what caused the actual harm.
“That year, I did recover—much later than I would have preferred—but the shoulder never felt quite the same. Nothing had returned to as it had been. Furthermore, following surgery, it wouldn’t be… But after enough injuries, you just get a gut feeling about what is and isn’t proper.
At the age of 29, Morgan thought that the next season would bring about a change in circumstances. However, he was aware that the fight would not be easy.
After working himself into the ground during the summer, Round 2’s harmless tackle caused the damage.
To ensure he finished the game in case it was his last, he played through the agony.
Indeed, it was. Less than three weeks later, Morgan declared his retirement.
“I don’t know how long it’ll last the way it is, but I want to give it every chance to be OK,” he recalls thinking as 2021 approached.
“I put effort into it.”I worked on my physique as much over the off-season as I had ever done in my career, but sadly, the second game in, I suffered another injury.
“It was actually a fairly typical tackle, but I felt a tremendous crunch through my shoulder, which was caused by the screws coming loose once more. The two installed screws snapped. Simply put, following the illness, nothing was ever quite the same.
“I completed the game since I didn’t want to quit if this was the last one.
“That doesn’t mean I made up my mind at that point; rather, the decision was delayed as I went through the process of determining whether or not to continue.
