The all-time player for Detroit Lions has officially announced his retirement due to his wife
One of the best wide receivers in NFL history has decided to retire. Calvin Johnson announced his retirement on Tuesday after nine years in the league, taking with him every key Detroit Lions record as well as 15 NFL records. One of the league records was the most receiving yards in a season (1,964 in 2012). Instead of having a formal press conference, Johnson issued an official statement via the Lions on Tuesday.
Let me begin by apologizing for making this announcement in a statement rather than in person. While I recognize the significance of this, those who know me best will understand and be unsurprised that I chose not to hold a press conference for this announcement,” Johnson stated in the Lions’ press statement, as cited by ESPN. “After much prayer, reflection, and discussion with loved ones, I’ve made the painful choice to retire from the Lions and professional football. I’ve played my final football game.
Let me assure you that this was not a simple or hurried decision,” he added. As previously indicated, I, along with those closest to me, have spent a great deal of time, consideration, and prayer on this decision, and I am completely at peace with it. I also want you to know that I hold the highest regard and admiration for the game of football. It has offered so much for me and my family, and I am eternally grateful to the game.” Johnson, who stood 6-foot-5, 237 pounds and ran a 4.35-second 40-yard sprint at the 2007 NFL Combine, more than earned the nickname “Megatron” for his remarkable abilities. Johnson, at 30, walks away as No. 43 all-time in receptions, No. 27 in yards, and 22nd.
