After a terrible conclusion to a season full of title hopes, head coach Mike Budenholzer of the Milwaukee Bucks has parted ways with the team. The 53-year-old led the squad to its first NBA championship since 1971 in 2021 and served as head coach for the previous five seasons.
A tough choice to make
General manager of the Bucks Jon Horst stated that it was a difficult choice to make. After all, Budenholzer has contributed to the Bucks’ current run of consistent success, which has seen them challenge for the NBA championship every year.

“The decision to make this change was very difficult,” said Horst. “Bud guided our club into an era of consistent success, to the Bucks’ first championship in fifty years, and for five amazing seasons. We are appreciative of the winning and leadership culture that Bud contributed to the development of in Milwaukee.”
Budenholzer’s 271 victories versus just 120 defeats during his tenure with the Bucks was the greatest record in the league at the time. In the previous five years, Budenholzer has also guided the Bucks to a 38-23 record in the NBA Playoffs.
The Bucks have only won one NBA championship in the last five years, despite having an unblemished record. While injuries have undoubtedly contributed to their playoff losses—All-Star Khris Middleton missed a large portion of the playoffs the previous season—Budenholzer’s coaching abilities were surpassed by his Miami counterpart in the opening round of this year’s NBA playoffs.
Even though Giannis was out of the lineup for a few games, the Bucks still had a strong roster with Bobby Portis, Jrue Holiday, Brook Lopez, and Middleton. Conversely, Tyler Herro and Victor Oladipo, two of Miami’s best players, were sidelined by injuries. Despite all the odds against them, the Heat managed to win the series in five games, mostly because of the incredible efforts of star shooting guard Jimmy Butler, who finished the series with an incredible 37 points per game on average.
“This is an opportunity for us to refocus and reenergize our efforts as we continue building toward our next championship season,” Horst stated.
