Sad news. Due to his wife, the head coach of Rutgers has officially announced his retirement.
Athletic Director Pat Hobbs announced today that Rutgers University and head football coach Greg Schiano have reached an agreement to extend their contract. Schiano will lead the program until 2030 according to the terms of the deal.
Leading the Scarlet Knights to eight bowl games leading up to the Bad Boy Mowers Pinstripe Bowl is Schiano, the program’s all-time victories leader. Under Schiano, Rutgers has a 5-2 record in bowl games. Thirteen players from the Scarlet Knights were honored with All-Big Ten honors at the end of the 2023 regular season, which is the second-highest number in the program’s history.
Hobbs declared, “It’s a great day for Rutgers Athletics.” “In four years, Coach Schiano has transformed our program, this year resulting in bowl eligibility. Continuity is critical in building winning programs. We have the right leader and the right staff to lead the Scarlet Knights in the years ahead.”
“I would like to thank President Holloway, Athletic Director Pat Hobbs, the Board of Governors and our entire team for their continued belief in what we are building,” Schiano stated. “Rutgers is home to my family and me, and we are blessed to have the opportunity to build a championship program right here in New Jersey.”
Schiano will receive $6.25 million in 2024 as compensation under the terms of the new contract.
Rutgers not only won every non-conference game on the 2023 schedule, but they also tied the franchise record for most Big Ten victories in a season. This includes an 18-point comeback in the fourth quarter to defeat Michigan State, a season-opening victory over Northwestern, and 276 running yards en route to an away victory against Indiana.
Rutgers ranked 27th nationally in opponents’ average points allowed, averaging just 21.0. The team has the ninth-best red zone defense, is ranked 11th in passing yards allowed (175.9), and ranks 19th overall in the nation (313.7) in total defense.
With 1,099 rushing yards on 217 runs, Kyle Monangai, a running back on the All-Big Ten Second Team, is the Scarlet Knights’ top offensive weapon and the league’s leading rusher. He’s scored seven touchdowns, and quarterback Gavin Wimsatt has passed and run for nine scores. After making 14 of 16 field goals, PK Jai Patel was named to the All-Big Ten Third Team, setting a record for the most accurate season in team history.
