The Ole Miss women’s basketball team has made it a habit to compete in and succeed in the SEC tournament.

Following their 84-74 victory over Florida on Friday night, the Rebels have now won their first postseason game for four consecutive seasons.

Their most recent victory has given them the opportunity to kick a bad habit. Since 1993, they have not won two games in an SEC tournament. Since then, Ole Miss has won its first eight games in the SEC tournament. It lost its second on 17 of those times, and the outcome for this season is still unknown.

In the last two seasons, the Rebels have faced a formidable South Carolina squad in the SEC semifinals. It doesn’t appear any easier on paper to play second-seeded LSU on Saturday (6 p.m. CT, ESPNU).

Ole Miss coach Yolett McPhee-McCuin stated on Friday, “We’re gonna have to come to play, because they have a bunch of WNBA players on their roster, so really looking forward to the challenge.”

In Oxford, the Rebels (23-7) suffered their first defeat of the year, 84-73, against the reigning national champions. Before the Tigers (27-4) surged away in the fourth quarter, Ole Miss trailed the game by five points.

The way her squad played defense in the opening half of the game—allowing 50 points—bothered McPhee-McCuin. The Rebels are typically most at ease in low-scoring games, particularly when facing teams with as much quality as LSU.

“I just expect us to just stay true to who we are, defend at a high level, not get too high or too low,” McPhee-McCuin stated. “When we played them at our home, we had opportunities. We might not have been prepared for the occasion, either. My team is, I believe, prepared for this time.”

It’s hard to see the Rebels gaining greater momentum before this game. They have won seven straight, six of those by a margin of double digits.

And they have improved offensively even though they are known as a defense-first team. The Rebels have three players who can score buckets of points: Madison Scott, Kennedy-Todd Williams, and Marquesha Davis, who scored a career-high 33 points versus Florida.

“My mentors always told me that you have to have your team singing ‘Kumbaya’ in March,” said McPhee-McCuin. “It makes no difference what occurs in January. It makes no difference what occurs in February. The head coach is responsible for ensuring that during March, everyone is giving each other hugs and singing “Kumbaya.” We cherish one another. The mental state of our squad is excellent.”
