Good news: The Ajax Amsterdam has established a new name the team
The Dutch professional football (soccer) team Ajax was founded in Amsterdam in 1900. The most successful club in the Netherlands, Ajax is mainly recognized for developing a string of entertaining attacking teams.
In 1911, Ajax received its first promotion to the highest Dutch competition, the Eredivisie. Ajax won eight Eredivisie titles when Jack Reynolds was their coach for three different stints (1915–25, 1928–40, and 1945–47). However, by the middle of the 1960s, the team was having trouble finishing close to the bottom of the first division when Rinus Michels, a former striker for the team, took over. By creating an attacking style of play in which gifted young players like Ruud Krol, Johan Neeskens, Arie Haan, and Johan Cruyff regularly switched positions throughout a game, Michels turned Ajax’s fortunes around. This method of play, called “total football,” quickly
gained international fame. Ajax became the first Dutch team to reach the European Cup final in 1969, and it went on to win the Eredivisie six times in eight years starting in 1966 (now known as the Champions League). The team won the 1972 Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) Super Cup, the 1972 Intercontinental Cup, and the European Cup three years in a row (1971–1973).
Following the 1980s, Ajax experienced more domestic success that increased their league championship total to 34 in addition to 19 Dutch Cups and 7 Dutch Super Cups. Ajax did win the European Cup Winners’ Cup in 1987, the UEFA Cup in 1992, and the Champions League in 1995—beating AC Milan in the final—despite success overseas proving more difficult. After more than 60 years at De Meer Stadium, Ajax relocated to the Amsterdam ArenA in 1996. Notably, the Amsterdam ArenA features a retractable roof, which is unusual for a football stadium in Europe. Ajax is renowned for developing a large number of gifted young players who are frequently traded to elite
