Following the Tigers’ victory on Saturday in the American Athletic Conference championship game, two individuals with knowledge of the decision announced that Florida State will name Mike Norvell, the football coach of Memphis, as their next coach on Sunday.
Due to the lack of an official announcement, two persons who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity said that Norvell will be that coach.
Even after the game, when a Memphis fan continued saying to himself that he hoped Norvell would announce he was staying with the Tigers, Norvell refused to answer any inquiries about his future. When questioned about Florida State’s press conference on Sunday, he also avoided the topic.
“This football team is the center of our attention tonight,” stated Norvell, who looked moved when his Tigers talked earlier next to him. It has nothing to do with me. It is unrelated to anything. This team’s goal is to win the American Conference Championship. We’re thrilled with what we were able to accomplish tonight, and I appreciate these people and the work they did today.
Memphis has lost to UCF on the road in the last two American championship games. The Tigers(12-1) are currently favored to be the top Group of Five team and to play in the Cotton Bowl.
When asked if he would lead the Tigers in Memphis’ anticipated Cotton Bowl appearance as Group of Five representatives, Norvell said with a straightforward “Obviously, that’s the plan.”
