Breaking news: Two players and the head coach of the Oklahoma Sooners have just announced their departure from the team.
Ted Roof, the defensive coordinator for the Oklahoma Sooners, announced his joint departure from the program along with head coach Brent Venables.
Roof has been with Venables ever since he was hired by the Oklahoma Sooners, and this will be Venables’ first head coaching search for a defensive coordinator.

Roof has worked for multiple Power-Five colleges as a defensive coordinator. He has been teaching on the defensive side of the ball since 1987 and has a long history as a defensive assistant. Roof most recently played alongside Venables as a defensive assistant for the Clemson Tigers in 2021.
Roof recently served as the Vanderbilt Commodores’ defensive coordinator in 2020. Roof has served as the defensive coordinator for the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets and the Appalachian State Mountaineers.

According to Venables, he gave Roof an alternative position within the Oklahoma Sooners organization. Venables gave an explanation for his decision to replace Roof as defensive coordinator in an On3 piece.
Ted has my deepest regard and gratitude, stated Brent Venables in a statement. “I gave him the option to stay on our staff in a different capacity and informed him on Wednesday that I had decided to take a different approach at defensive coordinator. He clarified that he will look to continue coaching at a different school because he has a strong desire to do so.
Despite ranking 79th in total defense during the 2023 season, Roof’s defense helped the Sooners finish 10-3. Oklahoma fared quite well against the run but horribly against the pass.
The pass defense of the Sooners ranked 112th in the country. In 2023, they gave up 250.8 passing yards per game and ranked 51st in the country for touchdowns given up through the air.
The Oklahoma defense’s ability to force turnovers this season was one strength. Their two turnovers per game ranked them fourth in the country.
