Good news: The head coach of the St. Louis Cardinals has just announced, celebrating his birthday
Here, in the silence that preceded pitchers’ and catchers’ reports in February of last year, Oli Marmol gave me his two words.
St. Louis Cardinals versus Minnesota Twins
Before the Cardinals’ Tuesday, August 1, 2023, game at Busch Stadium against the Twins, manager Oliver Marmol speaks with the media.

It was his task to think of only one word at this point. The Cardinals management was advised by high-performance psychologist Dr. Michael Gervais, who assists leaders in mastering abilities, to express his ideology in one phrase. Marmol, though, was stuck on two:
Sincerity and inquisitiveness.
These are the same qualities that made him a successful major league manager in the first place, helping him finish first in his debut season with a 93-69 record.
These are the qualities that will aid Marmol in climbing back to the top of the charts and winning over Cardinal Nation, particularly the first word.

The day before pitchers and catchers gather for the crucial spring training in 2024, Marmol told me in his office that honesty is first and foremost about being honest with oneself. “It involves being truthful to ensure that you’re carrying out all necessary tasks to achieve achievement. And then acting in a way that allows other people to be honest with you and being honest with them. This summer, I spent a lot of time thinking about what I need to improve on. and then putting some of those areas into practice.
When asked to name such locations, Marmol resisted, doing something he hopes his pitchers won’t do.
Alright, it makes sense. Undoubtedly, 2023 was an incredible year, despite the Cardinals’ disappointing performance that resulted in only 71 victories. The management was reluctant to admit his shortcomings on Monday. All he wanted to do was concentrate on mending.
Furthermore, Marmol appears psychologically prepared to take on the entire task of returning the Cardinals to their former glory as 2024 approaches.
This third season, so to speak, is his “rubber game,” following a strong and a poor year.
Furthermore, it’s not like he wasn’t inquisitive and truthful in the midst of the 2023 catastrophe. However, Marmol is both humble and hungry enough to acknowledge that he still has opportunity to grow as a manager and to refine his two-word beliefs.
He’ll assist them in getting out of this problem that he helped them get into.

He won’t be the manager in 2025, of course, if they blow it in 2024. I believe that is understood by all. But this year, Marmol is the best candidate for the position.
Speaking with him reveals baseball acumen, a keen awareness of the standards set by the past, and a knowledge of the present player (and modern analytics).
