Every player in the San Francisco Giants dugout is required to stand for the playing of “The Star-Spangled Banner,” the national anthem of the United States, according to a new rule put in place by manager Bob Melvin.

Melvin clarifies that the rule is intended to present a united front before to games and claims that it is not based on any political agenda or even an MLB ruling.

“Look, we got some good players here, we’re a new team,” Melvin said to Bob Nightengale of USA Today on Friday. “More important is signaling to the opposing side that we’re prepared to play. Guys, I want you to be prepared to go. That has a distinct personality.

“It’s just something I embrace; it has nothing to do with what happened in the past or anything else.”

Every NFL, MLB, NBA, MLS, and NHL game involving an American team begins with the US national anthem, but the Giants have made a significant difference.

In response to the school shooting in Uvalde, Texas, that year that claimed the lives of 19 students and two teachers, former Giants manager Gabe Kapler took to the kneeling numerous times in protest following the death of George Floyd in 2020. In 2022, he also skipped the playing of the national anthem on the field.
