Steve Sarkisian paused briefly to contemplate the opportunity at Alabama following Nick Saban’s retirement in January. Deciding where to pursue his coaching career next didn’t take long.

Following Saban’s announcement that his tenure at Alabama was coming to an end, the Texas coach discussed his thinking process in an interview with ESPN’s Chris Low. In his 17 seasons leading the Crimson Tide, Nick Saban won six national titles, cementing his legacy as one of the most successful college football coaches in history.

Sarkisian stated, “Obviously, if I said I didn’t think about it, I’d be lying.” However, it only took me about sixty seconds to decide that, “Yeah, I’m not doing that.” Although I had a great two years at Alabama and enjoyed working with Coach Saban, in the end, you have to reap what you sow.

Citing the culture he and his team have established over the last three years as justification for staying, Sarkisian said, adding that he thinks Texas is poised for a “epic” run. He previously spent two seasons as Alabama’s offensive coordinator under head coach Nick Saban.

Sarkisian consented to a four-year contract extension that would keep him at Texas through 2030 shortly after Saban announced his retirement. His guaranteed pay will now total $10.3 million per year thanks to the contract, which also includes $100,000 yearly increments.

Sarkisian has guided the Longhorns to a 25-14 record, a Big 12 title, two bowl appearances, and a spot in this year’s College Football Playoff semifinals during his three seasons in Austin.
