Following his death at the age of 66, former player Craig Stewart is being mourned by Collingwood and Richmond.

The well-liked big man Stewart played 115 games with the Magpies from 1978 to 1983. He then moved to the Tigers, where he played 35 more games in three years.

In addition, he is the father of James Stewart, who started his career at Greater Western Sydney and is presently on Essendon’s list.

After winning Preston’s best and fairest award in the VFA the year before, Stewart joined Collingwood in 1978.

The adaptable tall was primarily employed in attack, but he also made fans happy by playing down back and in the ruck.

He made a name for himself with the great coach Tom Hafey’s strong squad very fast, receiving the club’s award for best first-year player before being selected for the 1980 and 1981 championship teams.

Before moving to Richmond in 1984, when he was primarily employed as a defender, he placed third twice in the club’s best and fairest award competition.

In his later years, Stewart openly chastised Collingwood for their treatment of his son James, a prospective father-son recruit.

After being selected with selection No. 27 by GWS in the 2012 draft, James spent four seasons there before relocating to Essendon.

Even though he hasn’t played at the senior level this season, he has subsequently played 60 games for the Bombers.
