AFTER MUCH DISAPPOINTMENT:AND BECAUSE OF UNFINISHED deals AJAX AMSTERDAM’S HEAD COACH DECIDED TO RRTIRE.
It looks like Ajax Amsterdam will need to find a new head coach for the upcoming campaign. At the conclusion of the season, John van der Schip declared his retirement.
Prior to Sunday’s trip to PEC Zwolle, Van’t Schip made it known that he will not be returning for the upcoming campaign as head coach.
Coach Van’t Schip took charge only in October of last year. The long-standing club had dropped to the bottom of the table at the time. Ajax, led by the 1988 European champion, advanced to fifth position and are now eligible to play in the European Cup once more. However, they were humiliated in the cup by Hercules, a fourth-division team, 2:3, and were knocked out in the Conference round of 16.
The record champion Dutch team is far from being consistent. Five coaches have tried their hand on the sidelines since the prosperous Erik ten Hags period (until June 2022): Alfred Schreuder, Johnny Heitinga, Maurice Steijn, interim coach Hedwiges Maduro, and van’t Schip. Who will be in charge starting in the summer has not been chosen.
Van’t Schip, nevertheless, seems set to stay with the team. After conferring with the club management, the former professional, who participated in over 340 competitive games for Ajax throughout his playing career, want to assume a new job. He has already occupied this post multiple times in Amsterdam. He began working as a young coach at the close of the 1990s, and he later served as co-as well as a temporary coach.
In addition, he has served as a coach with Twente Enschede, PEC Zwolle, the Dutch national team (assisting Marco van Basten), and Melbourne in Australia. Most recently, from July 2019 to December 2021, he served as Greece’s national coach.
